Motion is the brainchild of saxophonist Andrew Brooks and pianist Berish Bilander, who have united their shared interest in jazz, progressive rock, 20th century classical music and ambient sounds. Adding bassist Nick Abbey and drummer Hugh Harvey, the group blurs the lines between composition and improvisation, with a focus on spontaneous interaction.
Created in 2008, Motion has since become a regular fixture in the Melbourne music scene and toured Perth in 2009, appearing as part of the TURA Totally Huge New Music Festival.
In early 2010, the band released their debut album 'Presence' featuring guest performances by vocalist Gian Slater and guitarist Brett Thompson. 'Presence' received great critical acclaim and gained airplay on the ABC Classic FM program, 'Jazztrack.'
To promote their album, Motion toured the east coast in July 2010 and recently signed a distribution deal with the creative-music network and label, Listen/Hear Collective.
Motion is planning a national tour for early 2011.
Originally from Sydney, saxophonist and composer Andrew Brooks currently resides in Melbourne, where he co-leads the original bands Motion and Terracotta Tile Games. Andrew regularly collaborates with some of Australia's leading musicians such as Tony Gould, ATM15 and Sarah McKenzie. He recently travelled to Canada to participate in BANFF, a prestigious music program run by Dave Douglas. As well as pursuing an active life as a performer and composer, Andrew is the co-founder of the new creative-music network and record label, Listen/Hear Collective.
Berish Bilander is a pianist, composer and sound-engineer from Melbourne, Australia. He currently co-leads the original new-music ensemble Motion and is collaborating with visual artists Christian Ghezzi and Scott Heinrich on the multimedia 'Australia Project'. Berish's eclectic music tastes extend beyond his jazz roots, and he has been lucky enough to tour and record with some of Australia's finest contemporary acts including folk-rock duo Vika and Lynda Bull, blues singer Jaimi Faulkner and funk and soul outfit The Single Malt Special.
